The Balcón de Europa — The Viewpoint That Named the Town
A former clifftop bastion, now a pedestrian promenade with 180-degree Mediterranean views. At sunrise, before the ice-cream parlours open, you'll have it practically to yourself. King Alfonso XII named it in 1885 — his bronze statue still leans on the railing.
Burriana Beach — The Jewel of the Eastern Costa del Sol
Nerja's main beach earns its reputation: golden sand, crystal-clear water and the best chiringuitos in the area. At <strong>Ayo</strong>, paella has been cooked over an open wood fire for 50 years — and Ayo himself still stirs the rice. A generous plate costs around €9.
The Nerja Caves — The Underground Cathedral
Four kilometres from the centre, one of Europe's most important cave systems, home to the world's largest natural column (32 metres) and rock paintings over 20,000 years old. Book online (about €15) and go early: the constant 19-degree interior is a blessing in summer.
Frigiliana — The Essential Day Trip
Ten minutes by car, one of Spain's most awarded white villages. Moorish alleys, bougainvillea, and cane honey from Europe's last remaining factory. Go at sunset, once the tour groups have left.
Gastronomy Worth Knowing
Ayo (Burriana): the legendary paella — no reservations, arrive before 1:30pm. La Puntilla (Calle Bolivia): fish of the day and espetos without pretence, where locals actually eat. Oliva (Calle Pintada): for fine dining, the best tasting menu east of Málaga.
How do you get to Nerja from Málaga?
By car, 50 minutes on the A-7. By ALSA bus from Málaga station, 1h–1h30, about €5. There is no train. Flying into Málaga airport, the direct drive takes about 55 minutes.
Is it worth staying in Nerja instead of Málaga?
They're different holidays. Málaga city means culture, museums and urban gastronomy; Nerja means beaches, coves and village pace. For stays of 5+ days, many of our guests combine both: a few days in Málaga, the rest in Nerja.
