Málaga & Costa del Sol Beaches: Complete Guide

Complete guide to every beach in Málaga city and the Costa del Sol: La Malagueta, Huelin, Pedregalejo, El Palo, Benalmádena. Facilities, crowd levels, and best time to visit.

Málaga's Beaches: Far More Than La Malagueta

Málaga has over 14 kilometres of urban coastline and each stretch has a completely different personality. Most tourists only know La Malagueta. Those of us who live here know the best beaches are elsewhere. This Costa del Sol guide tells you the truth about every beach — no filters, no tourist office spin.

La Malagueta: The City-Centre Beach

Is La Malagueta beach worth visiting?

La Malagueta is Málaga's most iconic beach. A five-minute walk from the Historic Centre, with the port in the background and the MALAGUETA letters as the obligatory photo. Dark medium-grain sand, 1,200 metres long.

The good: Unbeatable location. Quality chiringuitos (Antonio Martín, El Balneario). Showers, sunbeds, lifeguards June to September. Perfect if you are staying in the centre and want beach time without transport.

The bad: In July and August it is hard to find space after 11:00. The water is not the cleanest in Málaga (port proximity). Promenade noise.

Verdict: Perfect for a quick morning at the beach if you are staying in our La Malagueta apartments. Not the beach for a full August day.

Huelin: The Local's Beach

What is Huelin beach like?

Playa de Huelin is the real favourite of Málaga residents. Wider than La Malagueta, less crowded, with authentic chiringuitos where the food is better and cheaper. Dark grey sand, 1,000 metres, Paseo Marítimo Antonio Banderas.

The good: Chiringuitos like Los Mellizos and Casa Vicente with excellent value. Local atmosphere, neighbourhood families. Easier parking than the centre. Playground next to the beach.

The bad: Not the most photogenic beach. No monumental views. Less touristy area (which for many is an advantage).

Verdict: If you are staying in Huelin, this is your everyday beach. Authentic Málaga without pretension. Perfect for families.

Pedregalejo & El Palo: Character Beaches

Which Málaga beach is best for espetos?

Pedregalejo and El Palo are the beaches where sardine espetos were invented. Small coves between breakwaters, chiringuitos with boats on the sand where sardines are grilled over olive-wood embers. The most authentic Costa del Sol experience.

The good: Fishing-village atmosphere within the city. The best espetos in Málaga (El Cabra, El Tintero in El Palo). Quieter than La Malagueta. Cleaner water.

The bad: Coarse sand with pebbles. Small coves. Pedregalejo fills up on summer weekends. Bus access (lines 11 and 3) from the centre.

Verdict: Essential for the beach-dining experience. Go midweek if you can.

Benalmádena: The Resort Beach

What are Benalmádena beaches like?

Benalmádena beaches (Arroyo de la Miel and Puerto Marina): Wide, well-equipped beaches with a more tourist-oriented atmosphere. Broad promenade, ideal for families.

The good: Cleaner water than Málaga city. Wide beaches with space even in August. Puerto Marina restaurants and shops nearby. Water parks close by.

The bad: 20 minutes by train from Málaga (Cercanías C1, 1.75 EUR). More resort atmosphere than city.

Verdict: Perfect day trip from Málaga. If you are in our Benalmádena apartments, the beaches are your garden. See our full Benalmádena guide.

Hidden Beaches: The Secrets

Playa de la Araña (towards Rincón de la Victoria): Small and wild. No chiringuitos, no sunbeds. Cliffs, crystal-clear water, trilobite fossil in the rocks. The most beautiful beach near Málaga for nature lovers.

Playa de Guadalmar (near the airport): Wide, windy, with dunes. Planes pass 50 metres overhead. Surreal experience. Less crowded than any urban beach.

When is the best time for the beach in Málaga?

The Costa del Sol has over 300 sunny days a year. Beach season runs from May to October. June and September are ideal: warm water (22-24C), uncrowded beaches, chiringuitos open. July and August are the hottest (up to 35C) and most crowded.

AltaHomes tip: Many of our guests come in May and October and enjoy virtually empty beaches at 25C. The best-kept secret of the Costa del Sol.
