Benalmádena: The Vibrant Costa del Sol

Discover Benalmádena, a complete vacation destination 20 minutes from Málaga city with Puerto Marina, cable car, and all of the Costa del Sol at your doorstep.

The Atmosphere

Benalmádena has it all — and it knows it. Twenty minutes from Málaga by train or the A-7 coastal road, it's the go-to destination for European families combining a beach week with cultural day-trips to the capital. But there's a layer the brochures miss: Benalmádena Pueblo, perched at 300 metres altitude, is one of the most authentic *pueblos blancos* on the Costa del Sol — without the tourist saturation of Mijas or Nerja.

Our verdict: ideal if you want a full holiday with a Málaga city base. Use Benalmádena for rest and the capital for culture. The train makes them practically a single destination.

What's Actually Worth Your Time

Puerto Marina — More Than a Harbour

Named among Europe's top 10 marinas multiple times. Its Venetian-inspired canal architecture looks almost unreal at sunset. The restaurants on the first bridge (waterside) offer surprising value. Order the almadraba bluefin tuna during season (May–July) at Restaurante Amorino.

Calamorro Cable Car — The Local's Secret

Go first thing in the morning (opens 10am). At 770 metres, on an east wind day, you can simultaneously see Málaga city, the Bay of Gibraltar and — on exceptional days — the Moroccan coast. Ticket: €16 adult. Avoid summer weekends — queues run an hour.

Benalmádena Pueblo — The Antidote to Mass Tourism

Taxi up (€8 from the marina) to the original hilltop village. Calle Herrera is exactly what you want: a timeless *taberna*, locals playing dominoes, local wine for €1.50. The Pre-Columbian Art Museum is tiny but genuinely surprising — Andean collections in an Andalusian village.

Gastronomy Worth Knowing

Freiduría El Miguelito (Avda. Alay, Arroyo de la Miel): the most honest Málaga-style fried fish in the area. No English menu, no laminated card. You carry your order in foil to the table outside. Pure existence.

How do you get to Benalmádena from Málaga?

From Málaga: Cercanías C1 train from María Zambrano or Centro-Alameda stations. 20 minutes, €1.75. For Puerto Marina, alight at Benalmádena-Arroyo and walk 12 minutes or take bus L110. Benalmádena is the easiest day trip from Málaga and one of the best on the Costa del Sol.

Is Benalmádena worth a full week?

Absolutely. Benalmádena has enough to fill a full week: beaches, Benalmádena Pueblo, the cable car, excellent food, and day trips to Málaga city by train. Many of our guests combine a few days in Málaga with time in Benalmádena.

AltaHomes tip: staying in one of our Málaga city apartments? Use Benalmádena for beach days without August chaos at La Malagueta. The first train departs at 6:20am -- the Puerto Marina beach at 7am is an experience you will remember.
